Our national tennis player Zeynep Sönmez advanced to the second round at Wimbledon, the third Grand Slam tournament of the season, by defeating world number 29 Ann Li with sets of 7-5, 1-6, 6-4.

Standing out with her fighting spirit, mental fortitude, and effective performance in critical moments during the match played at the All England Lawn Tennis Club in London, Zeynep emerged victorious from the three-set battle to secure her spot in the second round.

A Magnificent Comeback from 4-1 Down in the First Set

Unable to make the start she wanted in the match, our national tennis player did not lose her focus despite falling 4-1 behind in the first set. Capitalizing well on the opportunities she created in return games, Zeynep found her rhythm and leveled the score with consecutive games won. Increasing the pressure on her opponent in the closing stretch of the set, our national player fought back from a 4-1 deficit through her successful performance on critical points to take the first set 7-5. In the final set, Zeynep Sönmez once again took control of the game. Overpowering her opponent through her composure on critical points, effective return games, and dominance in long rallies, our national tennis player won the deciding set 6-4 to walk off the court victorious.

With this result, Zeynep Sönmez—currently holding the 51st spot in the rankings—defeated her formidable top-30 opponent to reach the second round at Wimbledon, adding another milestone to her Grand Slam career.
